If one song from the early doo-wop era stands out for its excellence, it's the hauntingly-beautiful "Beside You" by the Swallows. The vocal group (together from 1946) began recording a few years later, when the old piano-blues and boogie sound was still dominant. The Swallows, more than any other group, created music that drew a line between the earlier style and the emerging doo-wop music. Doo-wop would have ome along anyway, of course. But this group had a profound and lasting impact on its development.
