At the end of the day, stories need to be about characters, not types. While nothing that ought to inspire a letter writing campaign from the ADL,"Triple 9" fails to make it past shorthand.

Director [John] Hillcoat has done a good job weaving this together. It's not that hard to follow and the characters are pretty well developed. Hard to watch? Yes. It's long at over 2 hours. But stick with it. It's worth staying for the smart payoff.

Rating: 2/4 --
There's a blue-chip cast running the gamut from A (Casey Affleck) to W (Kate Winslet) and terrific action sequences in Triple 9 - but in the end, this relentlessly nihilistic crime-caper thriller adds up to less than the sum of its impressive parts.

New York Post
4 stars out of 5 -- Affleck brings just the right mix of world-weariness and optimism....He is, arguably, the standout in a uniformly strong ensemble, though there should be shout-outs too for a pumped-up, almost unrecognisable Ejiofor, and for a scarily icy Winslet...

Rating: 7/10 --
Triple 9 does bring a couple of new ideas to the table and, though nothing it does is particularly groundbreaking, it is an entertaining ride whilst it lasts.

When not accompanied by expository dialogue and good character development, it all becomes just so much noise and confusion.

Product Description:
Ex-soldiers Michael Atwood (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Russel Welch (Norman Reedus) lead an Atlanta criminal organization, which also includes Welch's troubled brother Gabe (Aaron Paul) and dirty cops Marcus Belmont (Anthony Mackie) and Jorge Rodriguez (Clifton Collins Jr.). The five heisters are contracted by the Russian-Israeli mob, headed by matriarch Irina Vlaslov (Kate Winslet), to pull off a dangerous job, and they decide to create the diversion of an "officer down" call as a cover for the robbery. Marcus' straight-arrow new partner Chris (Casey Affleck) is soon targeted as the mark for the shooting; meanwhile, Chris' uncle, Detective Jeffrey Allen (Woody Harrelson), works to foil the criminals. John Hillcoat directed this ensemble action thriller written by Matt Cook.
