Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 4.5/5 --
Sjöström's film is not just an early horror, but an argument for the moral validity of cinema itself.

Radio Times
The double-exposure photography used throughout is a stupefying achievement of its own, an incantation of overlapping worlds and a visualization of the characters' growing awareness of the connection between body and soul.

CinePassion
The Phantom Carriage is not so much a whole film as it is a filmed collection of ideas, but the manner and enthusiasm to which they are realized is arresting, and hypnotic.

David Keyes' Cinema 2000
Slower than death itself, but just as spine chilling, this metaphysical morality play feels less like an artefact from a different era than a wintry warning from another world.

For all its brilliant and evocative use of double exposure, the most moving piece of technical "trickery" in The Phantom Carriage is a dissolve that turns a family picnic in a lakeside glade into a drunken orgy.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Based on Selma Lagerlof's rendition of a Swedish folktale, this moody, surrealistic drama takes its title from Death's favorite mode of transport, which must be driven by the last sinner to die before year's end. Victor Sjostrom both directed and stared in this film, fashioning a supernatural morality tale replete with atmospheric lighting and superimposition effects that were ahead of their time in 1920 and still chill today. He plays David Holm, a beliigerent drunkard who must contend with past misdeeds of pettiness and alcoholism as he gathers the souls of the dead. Will he roam the roads forever as a ghostly driver or achieve salvation beyond Death's spectre?
This disc includes the original Swedish edit: Korkarlen a.k.a. The Phantom Carriage and the Metro edit for America, released as The Stroke of Midnight. (each run 70 minutes)
