Entertainment Reviews:
Oswald, who never graduated past B-movies and television, makes masterful use of the frame, pitting his dark thriller elements against a full-color, widescreen frame.

Combustible Celluloid
Rating: 3/5 --
An excellent screenplay (unoriginal but full of tension), subtle direction by the overlooked and underutilized Oswald, and good photography help gloss over any weaknesses in the performances.

Wagner is perfect as the college kid psycho coolly removing the pregnant Woodward from his life.

Time Out
It's a gripping version of Ira Levin's best novel.

This multiple-murder story is an offbeat sort of film, with Robert Wagner portraying a calculating youth who intends to allow nothing to stand in his way to money... Gerd Oswald's restrained direction suits the mood.

Product Description:
Bud Corliss (Robert Wagner) is having trouble being accepted by the family of his comparatively-rich girlfriend, Dorothy Kingship (Joanne Woodward). Dorothy's pregnancy is only going to make matters worse. Instead of working their problems out, however, Bud coldly murders Dorothy and leaves false evidence that she committed suicide. When Dorothy's sister Ellen (Virginia Leith) decides to look into the death, Bud begins to wonder if he won't have to kill again. Lensed by Lucian Ballard, one of Sam Peckipah's favorite cinematographers.

DARK, REFLECTIVE SUSPENSE CLASSIC.
Movie Lover: SHADOWER from
LOUISVILLE, KY US -- June, 7, 2016
ONE OF THE UNDENIABLE SUSPENSE CLASSICS OF THE 1950S, THIS ORIGINAL VERSION OF IRA LEVIN'S A KISS BEFORE DYING (A LESS SUCCESSFUL REMAKE WOULD FOLLOW IN 1991), IS A DARK, HAUNTING SUSPENSE CLASSIC, BORDERING ON FILM NOIR. DIRECTOR GERD OSWALD CRAFTS MANY TWISTS AND TURNS FOR THE CHARACTERS, FROM ROBERT WAGNER TO JOANNE WOODWARD, VIRGINA LEITH, JEFFREY HUNTER (IN PARTICULAR), MARY ASTOR AND GEORGE MACREADY. SUSPENSE DEVOTEES OF THE 1950S-1960S, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN THE HITCHCOCKIAN MOLD, WILL FIND THIS AN INTRIGUING ADDITION TO THEIR COLLECTION.
