Sissy Goforth (Elizabeth Taylor), the world's richest woman, has retired to her lavish island estate to dictate her autobiography when poet Chris Flanders (Richard Burton) washes up on her beach. Flanders has the unfortunate reputation of calling on a lady one step before the undertaker and is known as the angel of death. Undaunted by this, Goforth undertakes to make Flanders her last lover.
