In spite of many brilliant touches Alfred Hitchcock's third film is disappointing. The British producer fails to establish that tense atmosphere of The Man Who Knew Too Much" and The 39 Steps. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- John Gielgud might not be everyone's ideal Hitchcock hero, and contemporary critics were quick to point out his lack of derring-do, but, in fact, he acquits himself admirably in this engaging thriller. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/5 -- Secret Agent bursts with not-so-hidden sexual innuendos and a heavy dose of comic dialogue, as well as Lorre's unrestrained lunatic comic performance. Full Review

This thriller may not be one of Hitchcock's best English films, but it is full of startling set pieces and quirky characterisation. Full Review

Directed by England's pudgy master of melodrama, Alfred Hitchcock, Secret Agent is a first-rate sample of his knack of achieving speed by never hurrying, horror by concentrating on the prosaic. Full Review

Secret Agent dallies much on the way but rates as good spy entertainment, suave story telling, and, in one particular case, brilliant characterization. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Novelist-turned-soldier Edgar Brodie (John Gielgud) is recruited by British intelligence during World War I to ferret out a mysterious German spy and eliminate him. Brodie is given a new identity by his handler, R, and teamed with two professional agents: an amoral, but amusingly deadly assassin known as The General (Peter Lorre) and Elsa Carrington (Madeleine Carroll), a beautiful blonde who will pose as his wife and cover for his new identity. After they mistakenly target an innocent old man as the operative and The General cold-bloodily murders him, both Edgar and Elsa question the morality of the mission, especially when The General only finds amusement in the blunder. When they eventually discover the spy's true identity, Elsa is determined to stop her two fellow agents from fulfilling the mission.
