The B&O originally followed the circuitous course of the Potomac River, but in the early 20th century, after the arrival of competitor Western Maryland, built a new, more direct line with tunnels cutting through the Appalachians and big bridges over the Potomac. Follow this scenic main line from Hancock to Paw Paw, West Virginia.
