When the New York Underground opened in 1904, it was the "most awesome engineering achievement of the century," according to the dazzled civic leaders responsible for it. This segment of PBS's long-running "The American Experience" series follows the subway from its genesis after a blizzard in 1888 through planning and politicking and the four years of busted-up city streets that preceded its debut.
