Rating: B -- Dark, brooding and brutal, "The Keeping Room" features finely carved performances in a Civil War period piece that might as well be post-apocalyptic. Full Review

Rating: 1.5/5 -- The film halfheartedly stokes a glacial, almost imperceptibly slow burn that never gives off any heat. Full Review

With the feminist themes lurking in the background but never explored in a satisfying manner, The Keeping Room is hard to see as anything other than a missed opportunity. Full Review

Handsomely mounted, with the kind of high-end, bleakly beautiful cinematography that is now common amongst period productions, but it's the performances that make it shine. Full Review

Product Description:

Daniel Barber's civil-war drama THE KEEPING ROOM stars Brit Marling as Augusta, a young woman in the South who must tend to her family's farm with the help of only her sulky teen sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld) and their loyal slave Mad (Muna Otaru). Two Union soldiers, played by Sam Worthington and Kyle Soller, who have been sent ahead by General Sherman to scout the area, steal and rape their way through the town, and eventually lay siege to Augusta's home. The women work together to protect themselves, and eventually must decide what to do as Sherman's army is on the verge of overrunning the entire area. THE KEEPING ROOM screened at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
