Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: A- --
An observant drama on the ill-effects of fascism, that's grounded on the lives of two anguished lonely souls with opposite personalities, beliefs and lives.

takes the framework of a familiar subset of romantic drama and vigorously turns it on its head as a means of tackling an acute example of what it means to be a social outsider

Cast against type, Mastroianni (Oscar-nominated) and Sophia Loren deliver great performances in Ettore Scola's sensitive drama about a suicidal homosexual and a tired housewife.

In Ettore Scola's funny, humane A Special Day, Antonietta and Gabriele are never really a couple, but their brief encounter lights up the screen with the kind of radiance you get only from great movie actors who also are great stars.

The Criterion Collection's 4K Blu-ray offers a beautiful transfer of Ettore Scola's long unavailable gem.

Product Description:
The film is set during the late 1930s: the occasion is the first meeting between Mussolini and Hitler. Left alone in her tenement home when her fascist husband runs off to attend the historic event, Sophia Loren strikes up a friendship with her homosexual neighbor Mastroianni. As the day segues into night, Loreon and Mastroianni develop a very special relationship that will radically alter both of their outlooks on life. Beyond the "sensational" aspect of virile Marcello Mastoianni playing a gay character, A SPECIAL DAY garnered a great deal of American attention when the stars promoted the film on the very first installment of PBS's DICK CAVETT SHOW (that's the one in which Mastroianni might have said the F-word).
