It's a mixture of quirk and heart-breaking sadness that features plenty of humor -- only to pull the emotional rug out from under its audience.

4 stars out of 4 -- Here is a film with no wasted characters, no wasted scenes. Yes, it’s fanciful and arch and indie-creative, but every inch of it feels real.
Chicago Sun-Times
3.5 stars out of 4 -- [S]harply funny, touching and vital.
Rolling Stone
The filmmaking from Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is hyper-stylized and a bit wonky at times, with a few odd security camera angles thrown into the mix. But it's also energetic and mostly fun to watch, especially the glimpses of their "awful" movies.

There's plenty to like here, but the movie focuses on the least interesting person on the screen, a curious choice considering we're talking life and death.

Product Description:
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL stars Thomas Mann as Greg, a high-school senior who spends most of his time filming low-budget remakes of classic movies with his friend Earl (RJ Cyler). Greg purposefully leads an antisocial life; his mother, concerned with his behavior, pushes him to befriend a classmate named Rachel (Olivia Cooke) who is battling leukemia. The two surprisingly develop a rich friendship, and she helps Greg and Earl with their creative endeavors. But when Rachel's condition grows more serious, Greg must deal with the messiness of real life. ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL screened at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
